Kubera (2025) Plot Summary

Set amidst Mumbai’s underground networks and political power games, Kubera begins with Neeraj Mitra (Jim Sarbh), a shrewd businessman who discovers hidden oil reserves in the Bay of Bengal. His ambition for power and wealth pushes him into alliances with corrupt politicians.

To execute his plan, he recruits Deepak (Nagarjuna), a once-honest CBI officer imprisoned for rejecting bribes. Deepak in turn gathers a group of society’s overlooked individuals—beggars and outcasts.

Among them is Deva (Dhanush), a naive villager who believes he has finally found a purpose in Mumbai. But soon, he learns he is just a pawn marked for death. His escape sparks a thrilling manhunt, during which he crosses paths with Sameera (Rashmika Mandanna), a woman struggling to survive in the city. Their bond becomes the emotional core of the film.

Performances

  • Dhanush delivers one of his finest roles, portraying Deva’s innocence and transformation with heartbreaking authenticity.
  • Nagarjuna shines as a conflicted officer caught between morality and survival.
  • Rashmika Mandanna brings depth and emotion to Sameera, grounding the film’s emotional arc.
  • Jim Sarbh is chilling as Neeraj Mitra, embodying capitalist greed and ambition.
  • Dalip Tahil and supporting cast add intensity and realism to the story.

Direction & Screenplay

Sekhar Kammula’s direction blends political drama with human emotion. The screenplay balances hope, betrayal, and suspense, while the dual narrative—between the wealthy elite and the neglected poor—elevates the storytelling.

  • Cinematography by Niketh Bommireddy captures the contrast between Mumbai’s grandeur and its dark underbelly.
  • Editing by Karthika Srinivas ensures the long runtime feels tight and compelling.

Music & Background Score

Composed by Devi Sri Prasad (DSP), the music enhances the emotional and dramatic layers of the story. Soulful songs reflect Deva’s innocence, while darker background scores heighten the intensity of Neeraj’s schemes.

Themes & Social Commentary

  • Exploitation of the Poor – How society commodifies its most vulnerable.
  • Blurred Lines of Power – When law enforcers turn into criminals.
  • Greed & Corruption – The cost of unchecked ambition.
  • Redemption & Dignity – Deva’s journey symbolizes hope amidst betrayal.

The haunting metaphor of beggars being exploited as “invisible tools” mirrors real socio-political structures.
